How to convert WebP to PNG
Images saved from websites are often WebP, and plenty of desktop software still refuses to open them. PNG is the universal lossless format — and unlike JPG, it keeps transparency, so logos and cut-outs survive the conversion intact.
PNG rather than JPG
Choose PNG when the image has a transparent background, or when it contains text, line art or a screenshot. PNG is lossless, so nothing further is discarded, and transparency is preserved — both things JPG cannot do. The cost is a considerably larger file, particularly for photographs, where JPG is the better target.
What PNG cannot recover
WebP is lossy, so detail was already discarded when the file was made. Converting to a lossless format preserves what remains but does not restore what is gone.
Why WebP files keep appearing
Most large websites now serve WebP because it is 25-35% smaller than JPG, so anything you save from a browser is likely to be one — and plenty of desktop software still will not open it.
