Common passport photo requirements

US passport: 600 x 600 px (2 x 2 inches)
UK / EU: 35 x 45 mm - around 413 x 531 px at 300 DPI
India: 350 x 450 px is widely accepted
Most online applications also cap the file at somewhere between 20 KB and 250 KB.

This page opens the resizer preset to 600 x 600, the US standard. Change the numbers for other countries, then run the result through the compressor if the portal has a size limit.

Important: this tool resizes and compresses. It does not check background colour, head position or expression - check your official government guidance for those rules before submitting.

Check your country's requirements first

There is no single passport photo standard. The US requires 2×2 inches, commonly submitted digitally as 600×600 pixels. The UK and most of Europe use 35×45 mm. India, Canada and Australia each specify their own. This page presets 600×600 because it is the most requested, but confirm what your application actually asks for before submitting.

The rules that get photos rejected

Size is rarely the reason a photo is refused. The usual causes are a shadow on the face or behind the head, a background that is not plain and light, glasses reflecting or obscuring the eyes, a head that is too large or too small in the frame, and any expression other than neutral with the mouth closed. Most applications also require the photo to be recent.

Taking one that works

Face a window in daylight, with a plain light wall behind you and enough distance from it that you do not cast a shadow. Have someone else take the photo from about a metre and a half away at eye level — an arm's-length selfie distorts facial proportions in a way that gets rejected.

Size limits as well as dimensions

Many portals require both exact dimensions and a maximum file size. Set the dimensions here, then compress to 100 KB or whatever the form specifies.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a passport photo be?

It depends on the country. 600 x 600 px suits the US; the UK and EU use 35 x 45 mm; India commonly uses 350 x 450 px. Always confirm with the official guidance.

How do I meet the KB limit too?

Resize first, then use our image compressor with a target size such as 100 KB or 50 KB.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. It is processed entirely in your browser - which matters for an identity document.
