How to watermark a PDF

Type your watermark text — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your company name — set the position, size, transparency and diagonal angle, and stamp it across every page. Protect proposals, previews and confidential documents before sharing them.

What a watermark is actually for

Two honest purposes. First, status — stamping DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL so nobody mistakes a working document for a final one, which is the single most common cause of the wrong version being acted on. Second, discouragement — putting your name across a document you are sharing so casual redistribution is awkward.

What it is not

A watermark is not security. It is drawn onto the page and someone determined can remove it. If a document genuinely must not be read by the wrong person, password protect it. If part of it must not be readable, redact it. A watermark is a label, not a lock.

Making it readable but not annoying

Diagonal across the middle at low opacity is the convention because it is visible on every page, survives being photocopied, and still lets the text be read. Very dark watermarks make the document harder to read than the watermark is worth; very faint ones disappear when printed. Somewhere around a quarter opacity is usually right.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control how visible the watermark is?

Yes — a transparency slider lets you go from a faint background mark to a bold stamp.

Does the watermark go on every page?

Yes, it is applied to all pages automatically in one click.

Can I remove a watermark later?

The watermark becomes part of the page content, so keep an unwatermarked copy of your original.

Can a watermark be removed?

By someone determined, yes — it is drawn onto the page. Treat it as a label, not as protection. Use a password if the document must not be read.

What opacity should a watermark be?

Around a quarter is usually right: clearly visible, still lets the text be read, and survives printing.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Watermarks are applied across the document. To treat pages differently, split the file, watermark one part, then merge them back.
