How to compress a PDF to 1 MB
1 MB is generous, so this page uses Recommended compression rather than anything aggressive. Documents of twenty or thirty scanned pages routinely fit, and quality stays close to the original.
The limit you meet on forms and email
1 MB is a common cap on visa applications, insurance claim portals and older content management systems. It is also a sensible self-imposed ceiling for an emailed report — large enough for a full document, small enough that nobody complains.
When a PDF will not drop below 1 MB
If a document is still over 1 MB after compression, it is almost always a long scan at very high resolution. Splitting it into chapters with Split PDF is usually more useful to the recipient anyway. Tighter targets: 500 KB · 300 KB
