Add your images and either pick a quality level or set a target size — like "under 200 KB" for job portals, visa applications and website forms with upload limits. Photos typically shrink 60-90% with no visible difference.
By quality — pick a level and see what size you get. Good when you want the image to look a certain way and the file size is flexible.
By target size — name a number of kilobytes and the tool works out the quality needed to land under it. This is what you want when a form says "maximum 100 KB" and simply will not accept 101.
They are built for different things. JPG discards detail the eye is bad at noticing, which works brilliantly on photographs. PNG is lossless, so a photograph saved as PNG can be five times larger for no visible benefit. If your photograph is a PNG, converting it to JPG often does more than any amount of compression.
The reverse also holds: screenshots, logos and diagrams belong as PNG. Compressing those as JPG produces visible fuzz around text and hard edges.
Heavy compression shows up first in flat areas — skies and skin develop faint blocks and banding — and around sharp edges. Photographs tolerate it well. Images containing text do not, which is why a screenshot squeezed to 20 KB looks far worse than a landscape at the same size.
