Three ways people split a PDF
Into single pages — every page becomes its own file, delivered as a ZIP. Useful when you need to send one page of a contract to someone without handing over the rest.
At a specific page — one document becomes two, cut at the point you choose. This is the common case for separating a covering letter from the report behind it.
By range — pull out pages 5 to 12 as their own document. If that is all you need, Extract Pages is the more direct tool.
Splitting a scan that contains several documents
A very common situation: you scanned a stack of paperwork in one pass and got a single 40-page PDF containing six separate documents. Why splitting does not shrink the total size much
Splitting a 10 MB file into ten parts does not give you ten 1 MB files. Each output has to carry its own copy of any shared resources — fonts especially — so the parts usually add up to more than the original. If the goal was a smaller file for an upload limit, Compress PDF is the right tool; splitting is for when the recipient only needs part of the document.
